Schematic design is the creative process of developing a basic concept for the site plan, floor plan and front elevation.

This phase is about exploring possibilities by drawing rough concepts on paper.  It requires sketching out a series of ideas and continually evaluating if those ideas are to be refined or simply tossed in the recycle bin.  The process is similar to solving a 1,000-piece puzzle, as we consider how every building component fits into the big picture.

We begin with loose lines on paper to identify zoning relationships, then continue to refine those ideas until they gradually become firm lines defining conceptual space.  We carefully think through how the spaces will be experienced.  What will you see as the house unfolds and reveals itself?  How does one space transition to the next?  Does it flow naturally?  Can we introduce natural light from multiple directions?  How does the house connect with the landscape?  All are important questions to consider, as we strive to create a house that feels right and functions well.
